General-speak

Not sure. Maybe I’m missing something but I’m wondering what I’m looking at and why?

—Thomas Outerbridge, President, City Green

Thanks so much for the link to your site... it’s amazing, inspired, inspiring... the most impressive webwork I’ve seen... spent an hour there and still had a lot left to explore, which I will...

—Cyrus Moore, Scholar & Hotelier

That’s a nice website: easy to use, gorgeous, informative. Your prose has an elusively soothing quality that reminds me of the ambient music of Brian Eno. I feel as if I’m in a protected space watched over by a benign healing presence.
The work is lovely, and your prices are reasonable. We still have your red and green pears up in our kitchen—the paper is especially soulful. If I need a photo pimped up (for Xmas presents maybe) I will instantly think of you.
Shine on!

—Andrew Garrison Ph.D., Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Studies, Miami University

My circuitry went into overload whilst surfing the land of graft, got kinda lost in there for what seemed like hours—when I returned to the 3dimension only 10 minutes had lapsed (whatever ‘time’ means). Your work resonates with me on all levels—stuff you can really bite into. You’re truly a gifted artist. Thatgoodoldschoolhandtopaper talent, tight/crisp/balanced.

—Doug Stiles, Interior Designer & Architect

Very cool site. I like the WYSIWYG Flash & some of the geometric ones. And the naked women, too, but because I’m shallow, not cuz I’m sensitive.

—Joseph Boucher, President Emeritus, St John’s College Alumni Association NYC Chapter

Wow. I am not sure I am smart enough for this though. I will look and look and look and try to be smart enough.

—Dennis Gronim, Senior VP, Colonial Hardware Corp

I really loved it. Its look and texture and content blended together to make one of the best sites I have seen.

—Dennis Gronim, Senior VP, Colonial Hardware Corp

Sparseness and subtlety in spades.

—Rick Sanford, Improprietor, Dental Records

I did take the time and look carefully at your work. You are very versatile in style yet detailed in treatment and style. Very nice man! Good type, good color, fresh and under control.

—Daniel Acharchan, Executive Producer, Flying Machine

Nice looking site.

—Garret Linn, Director, Art Logic Laboratories

I say onto you my son—you have talents...This is a well done site it has that classical timeless feel to it. At first, I thought it’s Leonardo’s work manual, then quickly realized and recognized some of your earlier drawings. It’s certainly a very original site. Congratulations!

—David Sotnik, Director, Paradigm Productions

Fantastic! Thanks so much.

—Thomas Jacobs, Investment Banker, First Albany Capital Inc

You are right, the two sites have each their own purpose and I like the personal side of
the previous. It’s like your ongoing run with my site (where’s all that cool personal stuff
I used to have?)...

—Jamie Peloquin, Designer, Axon Design & Marketing

It looks good.

—Leondros Cejas, IT Guru

I like your site very much. The background color is very pleasing. The language sparkles and does not offend. The site is very easy to navigate and makes sense, sensory-wise. The tone is both eager and experienced.

—Raphael Dagold, Poet & Cabinetmaker

Site looks great (new one)!

—Robert Tan, Architect, Gerard + Tan Architects

It’s quite daring, I particularly appreciate your tone of voice—I refer to descriptive writing and your subtle way to woo the potential client. It’s definitely ready for a main stream.
Congrats!!!
BTW, I recall your last site was also innovative...

—David Sotnik, Director, Paradigm Productions

It certainly has a mind bending quality...a positive. Be interesting to see it “hung” in a gallery.

—John Ryan, Collector & Entrepreneur

That’s an interesting direction you’re taking your business with output and retouching—as I understand it. How did I not know you were such an accomplished painter? Very nice work
on the Old Site. You’re very good at the “organic technical” design. I remember being very impressed with the 1997 calendar, and am happy to see you have it in your portfolio...

—Allen Martin, Art Director/Photographer

Hey, congratulations! The site is a sight to behold.

—Anthony Morley, Minister & Journalist

The site looks nice. I found the font/size hard to read.

—Daniel Convissor, The Analysis and Solutions Company

Most beautiful web site! My only comment is who is “we?”

—Christine Wright, Dance Teacher & Practicioner

Your site is great. From the mysterious start to the images to the way it looks and works. Excellent job. Among the best I have seen. Excellent.

—Dennis Gronim, Senior VP, Colonial Hardware Corp

Very nice, if unnavigable...
Flash! Welcome to the 90’s. The inability to navigate is not a specific problem. It is a systemic failure. Your site has no shoal markers or channel buoys to direct the visitor arriving in this strange and beautiful harbor. Yes, one can arbitrarily push buttons just as one can repeatedly run around in uncharted waters, but that is not navigation, more like groping about. What, for instance, does the dot signify?

—Mark Sugg, Vice President, Sugg Productions

It is not “intuitively” navigable, but if you are of a mind to poke around it becomes obvious. You have to “play the game.” That’s half the point, and should be inferred by the index page.

—Rick Sanford, Musician, Dental Records

Wow Chris. That’s a great site. The paintings are especially fine.

—Jefferson Morley, Journalist, The Washington Post

WOW. That looks great. What a wonderful body of work you have, and great presentation—edgy but not too edgy, iykwim.

—Chris Eaton, Director, Eaton Planning

It is a special territory, here, between what is and isn’t all about you. And exceptional.

—Ursula Sapien, Dancer

I still come up with the one page on Aristotle. Such madness!

—Scott Boyd, Sculptor

CBDGRAFT. Strange name for a business, do you have corruption subsidiary? The unconventional approach to navigation will confuse some people (me) but it is different
and logical once you figure it out. Given the maturity of web usage, especially in the client sphere, I would prefer a traditional home page, maybe with your most recent work, a recent award, or other news; make the name unique color and hotlink it to the home page, etc., etc. User friendly versus fcuk you loser, figure it out, I suppose, it’s a NY thing, like graft...
Otherwise, very tasteful.

—Mark Sugg, Vice President, Sugg Productions

I am way too stupid to understand that website. I can usually appreciate a good knock-knock joke though.

—Karen Evanoski, Secret Agent

Splendiferous.

—Christine Wright, Dance Teacher & Practicioner

Yesterday I finally looked at your website with all the time it deserves.
I am sorry, I do apologize but when I first looked at it I was in the middle of many things among which the preparation of an exhibition of paintings and photos of mine as well as a seminar on Piet Mondrian. I therefore only looked at the first 3 or 4 pages.
This is why I thought the whole site was about texts...Well now I realize your website consists of much much more. Yesterday I went through all pages and found out that the actual content lies at the end.
I felt so stupid to have sent you such a superficial comment...
I must tell you Chris that what I have seen is impressive.
I knew you were drawing, I remember your love for frames (the wax you were using for the wood...) I knew you were working with web design but what you have done through the past fifteen years is remarkable. And I wish to tell you about it.
With all the limits the electronic images have, I did like the quality of your drawings. They possess such a depth; in fact some of them are so complex and yet so spontaneous and simple.
I see the intellectual approach you have but this is just a part of a whole which shows a secret and mysterious energy which is not possible to define. I think, for istance, of the portrait of that young (hispanic or black?) guy, or some of the female bodies (the one with bent legs...) I would really like to see the original drawings.
To my surprise I discovered the watercolours and I do like them a lot.
You know, I paint abstract but I do appreciate good paintings. At the bottom, the ingredients of a good painting are the same both for realistic and abstract way of viewing reality.
That lady standing (with short hair) I like particularly. The paint strokes, the color balance ...but again, I would like to see the original.
I enjoyed seeing again some of the graphic works I knew already (Moon Calendar) and some new works. You always have an unexpected touch which capture one’s attention and makes the layout unpredictably alive. Like the Green with all those little arrows. Your CV is also very nice.
What about the NoMoBlood (Mobil, Twin Towers etc.)? Very effective. For whom have you done that?
Looking at your work yesterday evening made me feel good.
Keep working like that Chris.
I just wanted to say this.
Please excuse me if I was late.
I will look at the site again and eventually get back to you.
My regards to NYC.
All the best to you.
CIAO!

—Michele Sciam, Painter/Photographer/Art Theorist

Element-specific

Mobilize Poster

Obviously not too many designers would appreciate being wrapped up in: terrorism, war
for oil, the WTC attacks in particular, old Mobil commercials with the gas sloshing around
in the “o,” and even non-violent blood drives! :-) A fascinating combination that I had to
think about for a bit to figure out.

—Peter Bain, Principal, Incipit

Colonial Hardware Mailer

Really Great!
I like the “Unclogs the Work flow!”
It’s eye-catchy and the “Don’t try this at home” made me SMILE! Brilliant.

—Colonial Customer 1

Very good: “take the plunge;” “unclog the work flow.”

—Colonial Customer 2

LOVE it! Love the green... love the red lettering... nice read. Very appealing to the eye!
